Dr. Alberto de Castro

Alberto de Castro is interested in imaging the human eye to understand its properties and behavior. With age, some vision is lost but the knowledge of the characteristics in young eyes can be used to design corrections.

As a PhD Student in Susana Marcos’ lab, he studied the gradient refractive index of the crystalline lens using Optical Coherence Tomography images. He then learned how to image the retina in living eyes with techniques that combine adaptive optics and confocal microscopy with Stephen Burns and studied the possibility of imaging through a cataractous lens in Pablo Artal’s lab.

Dr. Giuseppe Marino

Giuseppe Marino received the Ph. D. degree in physics from King’s College London in April 2017 with a thesis on Second Harmonic Generation from hyperbolic nanorod metamaterials, which involved a combination of nano-optics, plasmonics, metamaterials and nonlinear optics. Since then he has worked in the field of semiconductor and dielectric nonlinear quantum nanophotonics at the Nonlinear Physics research centre of the Australian National University. He also worked in the field of photonic crystals during his Master’s research project at Imperial College London. He is the recipient of a number of Awards including an Erasmus Mundus scholarship within the Nanophi
project.

Dr. Katarzyna Krupa

Fellowship duration – 1 year

Katarzyna Krupa received her PhD in ‘cotutelle’ between the University of Besançon (France) and the Warsaw University of Technology (Poland) in 2009. Her doctoral thesis was focused on development of new methods for MEMS/MOEMS reliability investigation. In 2010 she joined the XLIM Institute, University of Limoges (France), as a post-doctoral researcher in nonlinear optics. In 2016 she moved to the ICB Institute, University of Bourgogne, to work on mode-locked fiber lasers. Since June 2017 she is working at the University of Brescia (Italy). Her research interests deal with spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics in optical fibers and crystals, as well as with dynamics of dissipative solitons. She is co-author of 22 scientific articles in top-ranked international journals and more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed conference proceedings.

Dr. Nikita Toropov

Dr. Nikita Toropov received his BSc and MSc degrees on photonics and optical technologies at Tomsk State University (Russia) and PhD diploma at ITMO University (St.Petersburg, Russia). The main field of expertise is light and heat modification of different nano- and microstructures, such as plasmonic nanostructures, organic thin films, optical fibres, etc. He was involved in a number of scientific projects related to these subjects (including international research staff exchange program) and was awarded some prizes. He was a winner of the Presidential grant, Fulbright grant, ‘British Council Researcher Links’ travel grant, and several grants from industrial companies and foundations.

Dr. Otti D’Huys

Host organization – Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies

Fellowship duration – 2 years

Otti D’Huys received her PhD at the Free University of Brussels (VUB, Belgium), studying synchronisation in networks of delay-coupled generic oscillators and their relation to coupled semiconductor lasers. After graduation in 2011, she joined the Computational Physics group at the University of Würzburg (Germany) as a postdoc, where she investigated fundamental properties of delayed chaotic systems, and the interplay of stochastic effects and propagation delays in dynamical systems. During a second postdoctoral appointment at Duke University (United States) she has been working on dynamics and information processing in experimental electronic networks. Since September 2016 she is a Lecturer at Aston University. Her research interests range from nonlinear laser dynamics to dynamics and applications of complex networks and, specifically, the role of time delays.

Dr. Tobias Hansson

Fellowship duration – 2 years

Tobias Hansson received the M.Sc. degree in engineering physics and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, in 2007 and 2011, respectively. Following his Ph.D. he has been a postdoctoral fellow with the University of Brescia in Italy (2012-2014), Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden (2014-2016), and INRS-EMT in Canada (2016-2017). His research activities concern the theoretical modeling of the spatio-temporal dynamics of optical frequency combs, mode-locked lasers and microresonator devices, and have so far resulted in more than 30 articles in international peer-reviewed journals.
